What to Know for Rehoming Your Cat or Dog

It's a sad thing to talk about or even consider, however for many, sometimes it is just something that has to happen. Rehoming or finding your dog or cat a new loving home is hard, but occasionally it needs to be done. For many it is a selfless act. They can't be home enough with their pet, can't give it the love they deserve, and they want it to be happy. For others, they may not want to do it, but have to because their apartment doesn't allow pets or they can't take it with them for another reason.

However, finding a new home for your beloved pet is tricky. Owners can't know if they can trust these new people, but here are some tips to rehome pets to new, good owners.

4 Benefits of Adopting an Older Dog

Many of the sad dog tails out there often happen to older dogs. Even though puppies are much more likely to be abused, older dogs have to deal with different problems, primarily abandonment. Puppies are cute and snuggly but once a dog begins to get older and owners actually have to take care of its medical needs, many opt to send it to a shelter where it will likely spend the rest of its life. Worse yet they will drive it out to the country and leave the old dog there. Almost everyone one of the dogs I had growing up out in rural Illinois were left on the roadside due to medical problems.

The people that send dogs to shelters or abandon them out in the country aren't real dogs owners. us real dog owners are in it until the end. However, even us good dog owners are less likely to adopt an older dog at a shelter, sad to say. Many people see puppies as babies and they want that crucial bonding phase, but dogs are not like kids. They bond well at any age.

That being said, there are some perks of adopting an older dog.

When A Pet Dies - Little Girl Writes Letter to God for Her Dead Dog and Gets and Amazing Response

I have a lot of sweet, kind-hearted pet lovers as friends on Facebook and on occasion they find some of the most amazing stories that have gone viral over that social outlet. This is one of those stories.

I tried my darnedest to track down the source of this story, but alas, it seems that it is too new to Facebook.

"Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Ohio Cat Rescued after Three Chilly Winter Days in Drain Pipe

On Wednesday March 12th, students heard the frantic meows of a cat on the grounds of Donnell Middle School. After intense investigation by middle school students, they deemed that there was a cat inside of a drainage pipe. They alerted school officials who in turn contacted animal control officers. At first they tried the classic lure of "here kitty, kitty" to try to lure out the cat and when that did not work they even tried to lure it out with an app that meowed The calling only made the cat howl louder. After these more conventional methods did not work, it was determined by animal control officers that the cat was stuck.

Shutting Down the Mills - Puppy Mill Raid Results in 120 Dogs and Other Animals Saved

Puppy Mills are big business all over the world. Big, horrible, cruel business. However, in the United States the state of Arkansas is particularly guilty of operating cruel puppy mills with an estimated 500 within the state alone. However, after the recent raid on White Hall farm there is one less mill and over 100 animals saved.

In a joint effort between The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the Jefferson Country Sheriff's Office, officials conducted a raid on the property of James and Tara Best. On the farm, officers were assaulted with the stench of ammonia upon entering the residence. They found 121 puppy mill dogs living in filthy conditions. They were kept in small cages, filled with feces and urine, lacking proper food and water, and in need of veterinary care. Off the 40 acre farm, 121 dogs, 20 horses, 19 chickens, 11 exotic birds, cats, rabbits and turtles were all removed to Saline County Humane Society. Many of the animals were drastically underweight, riddled with infection from improper living conditions, and in desperate need of love.

Neglected Horse Found Frozen to the Ground

This year's winter weather has been particularly harsh, even for well taken care of pets. However, the abused ones just have it all the worse. In Enoch City, Utah a passerby noticed a young yearling horse laying on the frozen ground out in the unprotected pasture next to her very thin mother. Luckily, for this pair of horses, the passerby called animal control. What they found was heartbreaking and is being called one of the worse cases of animal abuse and neglect in the state's history.

When animal control arrived on the scenes, they found the yearling still laying on the ground. However, what surprised them most was that she was frozen onto the ground itself. They yearling and her mother were both suffering from malnutrition, had signs of hypothermia and the young one had gotten an eye infections from laying in what had once been mud. Veterinarians that arrived with animal control were glad to arrive when they did, the young horse only had an estimated hours left to live if left in that condition.
